Streamlining Salesforce CPQ Discounts for a Smoother Quoting Process
One common challenge Salesforce CPQ users face is the Additional Discount field in the Quote Line Editor. This field accepts either a percentage or a dollar amount, yet many organizations base their approval rules on percentage discounts off the product’s list price. If a sales rep enters a dollar amount instead, the approval process can break down.
The problem becomes more visible during renewals. When a contract renews, CPQ converts the original percentage discount into a fixed dollar amount, which then appears on the renewal quote sent to the customer. This can create confusion and inconsistency, especially if the original intent was to preserve the same percentage discount.
To solve this, our team introduced a new “Product Discount (%)” field on the Quote Line. We added it to the Line Editor and removed the ambiguous Additional Discount field. Then, we implemented two simple price rules:
-
For new quotes: Automatically copy the Product Discount (%) value into the Additional Discount field for any newly added products.
-
For amendments and renewals: Copy the discount from the subscription back into the new Product Discount (%) field, preserving the original percentage.
By combining one new field with two targeted price rules, we eliminated a common CPQ pain point—making discounting clearer, more consistent, and easier for sales teams.
