Tableau Pulse is live! Announced as a part of the February 2024 update, Tableau Pulse was released as a new feature included for all Tableau Cloud Customers. Pulse expedites insights by delivering next-gen metric-based experiences straight to your preferred platform.
Pulse Metrics increase data confidence and help with data decision making because they are personalized by the end user. It also allows for easy self-service data consumption and exploration.
If your data meets the following requirements, then Tableau Pulse might be right for your business:
The data is at a daily granularity
The data can be published as a Tableau Data Source
The data source is performative
The data is disaggregated
The data is refreshed regularly with less than 48 hours of lag
Pulse Digests are the final output generated by Pulse Metrics. Digests can be delivered via slack or email (Microsoft Teams coming soon!) on a daily, weekly, or monthly schedule. Do you have any key performance indicators that meet the requirements outlined above? A few examples that could work great with Pulse Metrics are daily sales trend analysis, project win rates, pipeline conversion metrics, or profitability over time!
The most difficult part about creating Pulse Metrics is ensuring the data is prepared in an optimal way for Pulse to consume it. Once you have daily disaggregated data, a selection of dimensions, and a published data source, creating a Pulse Metric is easy!
1. Connect to the Pulse ready data source and name the metric
2. Select the measure you want to track and the associated date field
3. Specify which time periods to use (QTD, WTD, etc.), which dimensions to slice the measure by, and, if applicable, any required units or number formatting
Once established, Pulse Digests will start being delivered at your selected frequency. If Tableau AI is enabled for your Tableau Cloud Site, then each Digest will feature a brief summary paragraph to help explain the numeric analysis. Tableau Pulse Digests are already mobile and web compatible; no need for developer modifications!
There are several additional features to help you customize your Pulse Metric, these include:
Leveraging existing Tableau Groups to limit who has access to create Tableau Pulse Metrics
Customizing which users receive Pulse Digests
Indicating if Metric increases are favorable, unfavorable or neutral for color coded analysis
Selecting which dimensions or questions users can explore in their ah-hoc analysis
If required, row level security can be configured within the published data source to control data visibility
Tableau is also looking towards adding the following features (June/July onwards): increased Insight Summary per Metric, greater AI Enhanced Language capabilities, Metric Grouping, incorporating Metrics into Dashboards, and integrating Einstein Discovery Insights with Pulse.
